"The Earthship Project" – A Simple Survival Model
by JACK IN THE BOX e.V. // Presentation: Marianne Thiemann / Uwe Harzer

“Imagine a home that heats itself, that provides its own water, that grows its own food. Imagine that it needs no expensive technology, that it recycles its own waste, that it has its own power source. And now imagine that it can be built anywhere, by anyone, out of the things society throws away.” (Mike Reynolds, Founder of the earthship movement – www.earthship.com)

Upcycling and sustainable design is one the activity fields of the association JACK IN THE BOX e.V. Upcycling, as its opposite downcycling, is a subcategory of recycling. Upcycling stands for the refurbishing and transforming of worn-out materials and products to lift them up to a higher level within the production cycle, convert them for new usage and by this means increase their value. In view of today's global society and its future related questions on a livable existence of tomorrow, JACK IN THE BOX e.V. presents a tangible and perceptible upcycling-design within a larger dimension.

When in the '70s the inventor and designer Mike Reynolds started to create a new kind of house he had three goals in mind:

1. The house should be sustainable and solely materials should be used that are found in abundance all over the world or are recycled through the house itself.

2. It should completely be powered by natural energy sources and be entirely independent.

3. It should be possible to build such a house without spending a lot of money and without having special background knowledge.

On the open area JACK IN THE BOX e.V. presents the ideas of the worldwide-networked movement Earthship-Biotecture und starts the first German earthship-project in New Jack City! On the open vacant site of the of the aurelis Real Estate at the former freight station Cologne-Ehrenfeld almost everything can be found to realize an earthship. On of the design elements for the earthship are used tires: All over the world millions of tires lie around, that are not fully degradable and are not used any longer. Mike Reynolds, however, already at that time found out that tires filled with soil have extraordinary insulating properties, a high stability and are almost non-inflammable. Earthships show a nine times smaller ecological footprint in contrary to conventional constructions and represent a reasonable living space concept for a livable urban future.

(You can do anything...)
– Considerations on vacant sites

Action and installation art by Dr. Wolfgang Stöcker

For his analysis on vacant sites Wolfgang Stöcker has exemplarily explored the area around JACK IN THE BOX. What characterises a vacant site in the city? Is there nothing to be found there? Steppe and wasteland? Absence of plans?
Since April 2012, Stöcker is discovering the exact opposite: a convoluted “anarchic cosmos”, invisible inhabitants, savannah, mysterious holes in the ground, gnawed branches, basic vegetation, an agave, relics of space ships, laurel trees, golf balls.
He recorded his expeditions in a diary, which the visitors of the plan12 will find at the pavilion at JACK IN THE BOX. By means of this reading (or also freely intuitive) one can trace individual stations on the vacant site.
Plantings, philosophical huts, a watchtower as well as small, often imperceptible created interventions are to be discovered. Stöcker sends the visitor on an expedition into a foreign land. In Stöcker's diary all these things melt together to a fragmentary narration between poetry and truth.

"Several changes have arisen on the site: Chairs, armchairs are standing on the way towards the railway, the Voosen spring mattress (or rather the mattress core that's left over!) was obviously thrown exactly by 180 degrees. Now my mattress frame (which I thought out exactly for the means of the mattress core) lies at the top and the mattress core at the bottom. Who ever has done this, his work is rather aesthetic. This is especially because one corner of my mattress frame lies exactly on one of the stones, which had initially been provided for. That is what I ponder about. Has this been arranged intentionally? By that person unknown to me? Or has the whole mattress frame fallen on this stone by accident when it was tossed in the air?" Excerpt from the diary, 31 May 2012.

The value of the vacant site is its openness. Every land-use plan should provide a vacant site. You can do anything!

The action "Kann man alles machen – Überlegungen zur Brache" (Everything can be done – considerations on vacant sites) takes place on the JACK IN THE BOX area and runs from April until September 2012. Action and installation can be seen from 21 - 28 September 2012. The diary about the vacant site activities can be viewed at the JACK IN THE BOX tea pavilion.

“CROSSLINES” – Wege vom Dom zu Jack In The Box
Kunstprojekt by Dürrenfeld / Geitel / Tietz

21 Wege
